This week we learned about conducting quality wildlife observations. Bob taught us ethograms, pack dynamics, instantaneous and focal sampling. Then we went outside and did an instantaneous sample of the Animal Planet pack. Everyone chose a wolf to observe and then noted what they were doing every 30 seconds for fifteen minutes. We used a short hand notation to mark such observations as walking, eating, sitting, tail position, etc. We learned that doing such observations is tedious and would be difficult in a wilderness setting. We also learned that dressing for the weather would make this much more enjoyable.
